Research and Developement

Small cooperative economies are engines of research and development. Their open source production and academic underpinnings make R and D intrinsic. All branches of science and all favored technologies are advanced as a matter of course in the daily workings of small economies.

Open Source manufacture will increase the varieties of product design. This will stimulate research teams with wider arrays of solutions sought and built upon. Product development and testing for open source production favors the pooling of talent and resources found in small economies.

Production, academic and research activities will overlap. Research labs will draw material support from the same machine shops as production groups. The groupings of people in production, research and academics will be porous and mutually supportive. Scientist and engineers can teach, study, research and join in production. Machinists can customise tools for research. Academic research is supported as a necessary intellectual process. Basic science, humanities and arts will be supported in this interest and by the same resources as product research.

Currying the favor of grant givers is not a concern. All research is self supported either by the individual economy or by groups of economies joined for larger projects. The economies present the most diverse, concentrated and organized gatherings of technical expertise and fabricating facilites on the planet. No market corporation and no other university system can rival their breadth and depth.
